Today, we have taken the next step in our pursuit for fairer digital platforms globally, filing a lawsuit against Google in Australia’s Federal Court. Epic is pursuing legal action against Google over the “Restrictive Terms” of the Google Play Store Developer Distribution Agreement (DDA) that led to the removal of Fortnite from the Google Play Store. This arrives on the heels of a recent ruling from the Competition Appeal Tribunal on Epic’s case against Google. The complaint alleges that Apple’s anticompetitive behavior and prohibitively restrictive rules governing the distribution of apps and payment processing constitute a clear violation of UK competition law. Today we announced that we have filed a complaint against Apple in support of the United Kingdom Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) investigation into the company’s monopolistic App Store policies. You, as a mobile device owner, have the right to install apps from sources of your choosing. As a matter of principle, we refused to do so. Their proposal was an invitation for Epic to collude with Apple to maintain its monopoly over in-app payments on iOS, suppressing free market competition and inflating prices. Further, Apple threatened to prevent Epic from creating software for all Apple devices - not just on Fortnite but all of our games, and Unreal Engine too.Īpple demanded that Epic revert Fortnite to exclusively use Apple payments. Both Apple and Google retaliated by blocking Fortnite updates. Epic gave Fortnite players on iOS and Google Play a choice between Apple/Google payment and Epic direct payment, passing on savings to direct purchasers.
